Old Empires, New Kingdoms
General notes on Titles and their Precedence
Emperor / Empress / Caesar / Tsar / Kaiser – Ruler of an Emipre.
High King / Padishah / Ard Ri / Pharaoh / Maharaja – Ruler of a Kingdom, generally one with smaller divisions of sub-Kingdoms.
King / Queen / Sultan / Khan / Ri / Shah – Ruler of a Kingdom or sub-Kingdom.
Viceroy / Vicereine – Vice-king. Usually someone who speaks with the Kings’ authority over some specific responsibility. Can be a chief Diplomat, with autonomous authority.
Crown Prince / Crown Princess – Heir to the King (Queen).
Arch Duke / Arch Duchess / Grand Duke / Grand Duchess – Feudal ruler over a Duchy, owing fealty to the King. A Duchy is a very large territory, generally an entire Star System. An Arch-Duke generally has a larger or more lucrative territory then a regular Duke, or has been given extra authority by the King. Sometimes there is no real difference, other then more status.
Prince / Princess / Furst / Furstin – Children of the King and generally potential heirs. Sometimes this title is also given to children of a Duke or Grand Duke.
Margrave / Margavine / Marquis / Marquise / Markgraf / Markgrafin – Same basic title as a Duke, but the territory (called a March) is on the Border of the Kingdom / Empire, generally bordering a hostile neighbor, an Alien culture, or totally unexplored space. A Margrave has additional protective responsibilities because of this.
Duke / Duchess – Feudal ruler over a Duchy, owing fealty to the King. A Duchy is a very large territory, generally an entire Star System.
Landgrave / Landgravine / Landgraf / Landgrafin – Same basic title as a Count, but owes fealty directly to the King, not a Duke.
Count / Countess / Earl / Graf / Grafin – Feudal ruler over a County, but owes fealty to a Duke. This is a fairly large region – a large industrial station or asteroid, a continent, or sometimes an entire planet.
Viscount / Viscountess – Feudal ruler over a small County, but owes fealty to a Duke or a Count. Generally no larger then a continent in size. More often given as a non-landed, or ‘court’ title.
Baron / Baroness – Feudal ruler over a Barony, owing fealty to a Count. This can be a large city and the surrounding area, including several small towns, or sometimes a larger area with many smaller cities and towns.
Baronet / Baronetess – Feudal ruler over a small, less significant Barony. Rarely include a large city, this is generally a rural area containing small villages and towns. More often given as a non-landed, or ‘court’ title.
Knight – This title has many forms. It can be a Feudal ruler of a town or village. It can be a ranking military officer, or just a court title.
Esquire – Generally a ranking police or military officer.
Lord / Lady – Lowest noble rank, generally family of the holder of one of the titles above.
Not all of the Kingdoms use all of the ranks describe above, and some use them in different ways, but when they do, they will be described.
