Capt. Sanjay Roark
Captain of the Aquila, a Caramine Armed Merchant ship
Sanjay Roark grew up in the space-port slums of Humphries. When he was 12, he stowed away on board a small freighter carrying parts to Ahura station. When the crew found him, they put him to work earning his air and food. Working long hours without complaint, he proved himself to the crew. After that, he took whatever odd jobs he could get around and between both Ahura and Mazda stations; crewing ships when he could, working ports and loading freight if that was what he could get. Eventually, he saved enough money to put a down payment on an old warp-capable tramp freighter, the Aquila. Over the years, he has become well known in the system. He has a wide range of friends, from smugglers to Knights. He might even call Countess Ahura-Mazda something of a friend, having had befriended her when, as a child, she was traveling with her parents, on a ship where he was working security. As the liege of the Ahura and Mazda stations, she is the licensing authority for the Aquila and she has trusted him with some confidential shipping and courier work for her government. Sanjay loves life in space, especially running his own ship. While far from greedy, he will use every opportunity he encounters to get some advantage for himself or his ship. One time, at a grey-market auction, he acquired a random assortment of Alien equipment – a junk lot. Buried in the junk was most of a Qom cloaking device, and his engineer was able to install it in the Aquila, and get it working. It seems to give the Aquila near invisibility in space, and even makes it difficult to trace in a planetary atmosphere. Unfortunately, it consumes amazing amounts of power and seems to screw up the Aquila’s sensor suite; making it hard to navigate or shoot while the device is on. Even so, Sanjay has used it to good effect on the few smuggling jobs he has taken. He also knows the device is highly illegal, and that if it was discovered by the Knights Patrol, even his acquaintance with the Countess would not keep him out of jail, and the ship out of impound.
